This year was challenging for iOS music app developers. Audiobus, iOS 7 and Inter-App Audio. A lot of things to implement in just one year. We’ve seen a lot of new apps, great new synths, updates on our favorite DAWs, Audiobus/IAA effects which is kind of new class of music apps. It is a difficult task to pick just one best app so I choose one best app and also the best app in each category and I think it is fair enough to have a category of disappointment of the year.

There are not so many synths that are truly unique for the iPad and don’t have desktop versions. Nave is great synth. And it is good to see that developers choose iOS platform to develop it. It takes spectral synthesis to the next level with touch controls of the spectrum area and powerful sound design capabilities.$19.99

Thor for iPad
One of the most flexible synths for desktop was ported to iOS and it was great to see how developers from Propellerheads adopted user interface for the iPad smaller screen. And of course they kept all the powerful sonic capabilities of the synthesizer including wavetable and FM synthesis and 5 types of filters.$14.99

Guys in PositiveGrid made great job in transforming iPad into sound design paradise for guitarists. Great app from all perspectives: sound, flexibility, design and integration.$4.99

It is not just one app but the series of effect apps called AUFX. Currently we’ve seen 3 apps from Kymatica: Reverb, Delay and EQ.$4.99

When it was introduced it was one of the best music apps for the iPhone. Great features from the first release and great potential for the future releases. We know that guys from NI are capable of creating great software (take a look at a new Maschine 2 release for desktop or their latest Monark synth) and one of the best iOS apps – Traktor DJ (which is app of the year according to MusicRadar).
You can expect from such a big and experienced company much better support of new devices (iPhone 5 screen, retina, iPad version) and new technology (AudioBus, Inter-App Audio). But NI focused on paid add-on releases of sound packs for iMaschine without updates for the app itself.Free! [/titled_box]
